Australian actress Margot Robbie is set to bring to life one of the most iconic
dolls in history in the upcoming summer blockbuster, Barbie. Greta Gerwig's
highly anticipated film features Robbie as a live-action version of the popular
Mattel doll who embarks on a fabulous adventure after being expelled from
Barbieland while experiencing an existential crisis.
The trailer for the movie shows a world that is bursting
with candy-colored hues, and the setting appears to be Canadian. The ensemble
cast includes a bevy of stars such as Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, and Michael Cera,
who don neon yellow rollerskates, synthetic wigs, and baby blue lycra
swimsuits.
RYAN GOSLING AND SIMU LIU PLAY KEN
Ryan Gosling, who portrays Ken, is Robbie's blonde,
golden-skinned boyfriend doll. He meets his match in Liu, who plays an
alternate version of Ken. Liu's character has a confrontational dynamic with
Gosling's Ken.
MICHAEL CERA AS ALLAN
The internet went wild with the surprise casting of Superbad
and Scott Pilgrim actor, Michael Cera, as Allan, a real-life doll that was
discontinued in the 1960s. Allan was marketed as Ken's best friend and was even
able to wear Ken's clothes.
MORE CHARACTERS FROM THE BARBIE UNIVERSE
Barbie was first introduced by Mattel in 1959, and since
then, many versions of the iconic doll and her friends have been created. The
movie will also feature Midge, a pregnant doll who was controversial when it
was released. The character will be played by Emerald Fennell.
GRETA GERWIG AS DIRECTOR
Greta Gerwig directs the film, which marks her fourth
directorial effort following Lady Bird in 2017 and Little Women in 2019.
Gerwig, who co-directed Nights and Weekends in 2008 with Joe Swanberg, wanted
to take on this project after co-writing the script with Noah Baumbach, her
partner and frequent collaborator.
THE LONG GESTATING PROJECT
Barbie has been in the works since 2009, and before Gerwig
and Robbie signed onto the project, actors like Anne Hathaway and Amy Schumer
were in discussion for the lead role. However, creative differences led to them
dropping out of the project. Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody was also briefly
attached but didn't produce a script.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Barbie is a loving homage to the iconic doll brand that has
captured the hearts of millions of people worldwide. It is also a satirical
take on male patriarchy and women in society, offering a poignant commentary on
why Barbie has been criticized and yet remains a beloved toy for young girls.
With an all-star cast, a talented director, and an exciting storyline, Barbie
promises to be one of the summer's must-see movies.
